Going out to sea with the sea lions!

Last week we switched rotations at work, and now I am assigned to the sea lions! Sea lions is split up into two different groups- the pups who are just learning new stuff and the old guys who are seasoned pros at going out to sea-and we split our time between the two. In the past week, I've had a couple days with each crew, so I'm starting to get the hang of what to do everyday!

The crew that goes out to sea everyday is the Mark-5 crew. This navy system uses sea lions for object recovery off the bottom of the ocean! Everyday we go out to various depths with different sea lions and they practice finding targets that we drop down. It's really cool to see what the sea lions are capable of doing! Depending on the weather, it can be super nice out at sea! Yesterday was a really beautiful day- the water was really calm, it was sunny and I even saw a whale! Here are some pictures from the Navy website that show the sea lions locating practice targets! Pretty awesome, huh!?

The second crew in sea lions is the pups! This crew teaches all the new, younger guys the basic behaviors and gets them prepared to become fleet animals. While you don't get to go out to sea everyday with the pups, it's really cool to see how they train the animals new behaviors. The pups range in age from less than a year, all the way up to a couple years old, so you get to see all the different stages of learning and training. Not to mention that the little tiny pups are the cutest things ever!!!!!!!!! Seriously, so freaking cute!

The second pup picture shows what they look like when they are all dry, and it is by far the most adorable thing ever. You would think that sea lions might have course fur, but its actually super fluffy! They feel so soft and fuzzy when they are dry!

I'm really enjoying working with the sea lions so far! They are really interactive animals, and its cool how they are right there next to you while you are working with them! (Only bad thing is they have really bad smelling gas/poo! haha)

By the way, I can't believe it's already March! Where the heck did February go!?

Love the pictures.

I'm still trying to figure out why if I love animals so much, did I choose to work with people?
